The Outer machine: define your side silhouette and glute medius

Training on the Outer machine at the Booty Area

When we think about lower-body training, most classic exercises (like squats, lunges or deadlifts) work mainly in a forward-and-back plane of movement. That leaves the muscles responsible for lateral stability in the background.

The Outer machine from the Solid Rock line brilliantly solves that gap. Small but mighty, this machine isolates the glute medius and outer hip like nothing else. It's the perfect tool for building that lateral tone that defines your silhouette from every angle. Let's look at why it's a Booty Area favourite and how to get the most out of it.

Why is it the best exercise for isolating the outer glute?

The gluteus medius and minimus are responsible for hip abduction (moving the legs out to the sides). Developing these muscles isn't just about the aesthetics of a rounder, more defined silhouette from the front; it's also essential for knee health, since they stabilise the pelvis with every step, lunge or stride.

Training on the Solid Rock Outer machine, you perform a short, controlled and intense movement. By keeping the body upright and gripping the front handles firmly, you remove any chance of compensating with your torso. The stimulus goes straight, clean and undistracted to the outer glute, delivering a brutal, localised burn.

How-to guide: mastering the Outer machine for a perfect silhouette

For real isolation and flawless technique, teach your members to follow these simple steps:

  1. Initial setup: stand on the platform and rest the outside of your knees against the pads. Grip the front safety handle firmly to keep your torso stable.
  2. Body position: keep a slight bend in your knees and your chest up. Your back should stay neutral throughout the exercise, avoiding any body swing to build momentum.
  3. The opening (abduction): push your knees firmly outward using the outer side of your legs. The movement should come directly from the hip.
  4. Peak contraction: at the point of maximum opening, hold the position for 1 second, consciously squeezing the glute medius. You'll feel a pure, direct tension on the side of the hip.
  5. Controlled return: close your legs slowly and steadily, resisting the plate load the whole time until you're back at the starting position, then repeat.

馃挕 Trainer's tip: the Outer machine is hugely versatile within a routine. It's perfect both as an initial activation exercise for a lower-body session (waking up the glute before heavy lifting) and as a brutal finisher at the end of the workout, working high reps to chase maximum pump.
