If there's one basic exercise everyone associates with strong legs and glutes, it's the squat. But when it comes to loading heavy weight with a free bar across your shoulders, the big limiting factor for many people appears: fatigue or pain in the lower back, spinal compression and the fear of losing balance.
The Belt Squat machine from the Solid Rock line has arrived to revolutionise this movement. Its smart design allows for pure, deep, ultra-intense strength work while removing all load from the back. We take a deep dive into why it's one of the gems of the Booty Area and how to get the most out of it.
Why is it the best exercise to safely overload the lower body?
Unlike a conventional squat where the weight rests on your traps and squeezes the spine, on the Belt Squat the weight is loaded directly onto your hips via a belt.
By doing this, you free the spine completely and put 100% of the effort into your glutes and legs. Without needing to stabilise a heavy bar on your upper back, you can focus purely on driving with your legs and going as deep as you'd struggle to reach safely with free weight. It's the perfect tool to add real volume and chase muscle failure without risking a single millimetre of your back.
User guide: how to perform the perfect Belt Squat
To achieve that huge pump and avoid stressing your knees, teach your members to follow these steps:
- Belt setup: step onto the split non-slip platform. Fasten the high-resistance belt around your hips. Hook the belt chain to the machine's central carabiner so it sits taut.
- Foot position: place your feet slightly wider than shoulder width, with your toes pointing subtly outward, mirroring your natural squat stance.
- Starting and unhooking: grip the safety handlebar firmly for total stability. Push through your legs to stand fully upright; as you do, pull the safety lever back with your hand to release the load mechanism.
- The descent: lower slowly and under control, breaking parallel. With no load on your back, you'll notice you can keep your torso much more upright and go deeper, focusing the stimulus directly on your hips.
- The drive: push the floor away forcefully, driving force from the heels. Rise explosively keeping your glutes active throughout the range until you're back upright, without fully locking out your knees at the top.
- Safety lock: after your last rep, push the safety lever forward again while lowering slightly so the machine locks firmly in place. Unclip the belt from the carabiner with total ease.
馃挕 Trainer's tip: this is a spectacular machine for advanced variations like pause squats at the bottom, slow eccentric reps, or for finishing off a glute routine once your lower back is too fatigued to hold a free bar.
